What Your Job Will Be Like The Virtual Technologies and Engineering department is seeking a highly motivated year-round student intern to join our team! The successful candidate should have a background and interest in programming, modeling and/or design, and will work with a multi-disciplinary group to support the development of innovative digital solutions (e.g. Visualization AR/VR, Digital Twin, Distributed Ledger Technology) to support design, test and evaluation activities that support Sandia's missions. On any given day, you may be called on to: * Create, design and develop virtual models in Unity * Support coding, debugging, testing and integration of AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) models * Support integrating physical and virtual activities in a digital environment * Develop and test smart contracts for applications utilizing distributed ledger technologies * Generate reports and present designs, analysis or testing results to team, peers or mentors * This position will offer you substantial opportunity for training, technical mentorship, and work across multiple national security programs. Qualifications We Require You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements: * Earned bachelor's degree * Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program * Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 * Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer * U.S. citizenship Qualifications We Desire * Currently enrolled in a computer engineering, computer science, or related program * Experience with one or more programming languages (Python, C++, etc.) * Experience with development for game engine platforms (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine) * Experience in engineering design (taking an idea from concept through demonstration and delivery) * Strong problem-solving skills and ability to learn new skills and be creative based on project needs * Self-motivated and able to work in a multidisciplinary team environment * Excellent communication and documentation skills About Our Team The Virtual Technologies and Engineering department is responsible for the development and implementation of various elements of the Digital Engineering effort supporting our Nuclear Deterrent. The organization leads the development of a Digital Twin framework which integrates other model-based efforts into a cohesive and structured platform to support weapon system lifecycle decisions from concept through surveillance. The team also leads the Digital Engineering Strategy which helps integrate digital solutions that enable accelerated product development. This includes development of SOLSTICE, a platform for linked surrogate multi-physics models that enable rapid design and virtual build-test cycles, and leading the integration of modeling, simulation and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) tools into the nuclear weapon design, qualification, and surveillance mission spaces. Finally, the department leads all aspects of two strategic partnership programs with the Department of Defense, the Joint Munitions Program (JMP) and the Joint Enhanced Munition Technology Program (JEMTP), which mature technology with mutual benefit to the DOE and DoD weapon missions.
